Profit-seeking enterprises need accounting to keep a diary of their business activities, whether to be used by their managers for decision-making or to be reported to outsider. Large corporations, for example, are accountable to many parties in the society and they have to report to stockholders, governmental agencies, and to the public.

شرکتهای تجاری برای نگهداری اطلاعات فعالیتهای اقتصادی خود به حسابداری نیاز دارند، چه اطلاعاتی که توسط مدیران شرکت برای تصمیم سازی استفاده می شوند یا اطلاعاتی که به خارج از شرکت گزارش می شوند. برای مثال شرکتهای بزرگ به نهادهای در جامعه پاسخگو هستند. همچنین آنها مجبورند به سهامداران، نهادهای دولتی و رسمی گزارش دهند.
